We recently decommissioned Certificate Services running on Server 2003, and established a new CA on a system running Server 2008 R2. We're not using EFS extensively, so I deemed it simpler to uninstall Certificate Services on the old system, clean up AD, and set up Certificate Services as a fresh install on the new system, instead of moving/migrating Certificate Services.To convince workstations to autoenroll for a new certificate, I need to delete the old computer certificates. I'm scripting certutil for this purpose, and so far haven't found a way to delete only certificates issued by the old CA-the script also deletes the new autoenrolled certificates. I can change my script to do some registry work and effectively act as a run once script, but would prefer to simply have certutil delete certificates issued by a specific CA. The -dc dcname switch doesn't do what I want.Ideas?Thank you!

When facing this challenge these are my tips:. Get into the eventlog after this happens and see if you can ID any CA related events (cannot find root CA I bet).

If the Root CA was on an old server that was decommissioned and these were subordinate or child CA's then that is why you have trouble getting the CA to start and have to -CRL to clear it out. In that case I recommend considering completely removing the CA from the domain and adding it back new. Install a root CA -Only rub is if you have a huge environment with lots of Local CA issued SSL certs running any encryption on your LAN traffic will have to be reissued.

Most times you have 3rd party SSL for those key LOB applications and services so this is ok rip and replace. So please keep that in mind and do a deep discovery so you can ID any pain points you might encounter with a rip and replace.Report back if you need more.
